I have just started to try to fingerpick when I play instead of just strumming. It is much simpler than I thought it would be. I just place my fingers on the frets with my left hand as I usually would, then I use my right hand to only strum a few strings at a time. I don't follow any specific guitar tabs when I pluck, I just do whatever I think sounds best.
